209.5 GWh
gross electricity production in 2021
The Polenergia Group's Elektrociepłownia Nowa Sarzyna is located at the north-western edge of the town of Nowa Sarzyna. NSCP occupies an area of approximately 6 ha. The facility is located in an industrial area, in the direct vicinity of CIECH Sarzyna S.A. chemical plants. (CIECH Group) and Sarzyna Chemical Sp. z o.o. (Lerg Group).
The company generates electricity and heat. Energy is generated in cogeneration when natural gas or reserve fuel – light fuel oil – is burned in a combined cycle gas turbine unit. Heat generation is possible also without co-generation in a stand-by source – auxiliary boiler house fired with natural gas or light heating oil. The Company has 4 buyers of its products:

ENS has all the permits necessary to operate in accordance with environmental protection regulations.
No penalties were imposed on the company in 2021. The last inspection by the Provincial Environmental Protection Inspectorate took place in June 2021. No non-compliances were found and no comments were made.
The project of construction and financing of investments in the project-finance formula was developed and supervised by the first owner of the Company, i.e. by the American corporation Enron (Houston, Texas). The construction of ENS started in mid-1998, and the CHP plant started its commercial operation on June 1, 2000. In 1997, ENS concluded a long-term electricity sales agreement with Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), and in 1998 it concluded a 20-year heat supply agreement with the nearby Organika-Sarzyna Chemical Plant. Additionally, since 2000, ENS has been selling heat to the inhabitants of Nowa Sarzyna. For twenty years, gas was supplied by Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo, Commercial Branch in Warsaw, under a purchase and sale agreement of high-methane natural gas, and from 2020 it was supplied by a Polenergia Group company (Polenergia Obrót SA).
In 2011, ENS was acquired by Kulczyk Investment. Currently, the company is part of the Polenergia S.A. Group. based in Warsaw. From 2020, ENS sells electricity to a trading company belonging to the Polenergia Group. Heat is still sold to neighboring chemical plants and to the local municipal plant. The company also provides a self-start and power system reconstruction service on the basis of a renewed three-year contract with Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (mid 2020 – mid 2023).
The service covers the self-start of gas turbine sets and their operation in a separate part of the PPS to the extent necessary for the correct course of the process of restoring the operation of the National Power System after a voltage failure in the PPS or in its part. The most important element of this process is the supply of energy from the ENS for commissioning the power unit in the selected system power plant.
ENS is the first thermal power plant in Poland, the generating units of which have the ability to self-start and can be used in the process of rebuilding the Polish Power System. Until now, only hydroelectric power plants had such technical possibilities.
In 2021, ENS obtained a certificate of a participant in the Capacity Market and contracted the capacity obligation for 2026.
Since 2014, ENS has implemented the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in the field of combined heat and power generation. In May 2021, Lloyd’s Register Polska conducted an environmental audit in connection with the recertification of the environmental management system for compliance with the ISO 14001: 2015 standard. ENS has received a new Certificate of Approval ISO 14001: 2015 for the Environmental Management System in the field of combined heat and power generation, which will be valid for 3 years, i.e. from June 11, 2020 to June 10, 2023.
Since 2011, by the decision of the Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service, ENS has been included in the Group of plants with a high and increased risk of a serious industrial accident, concentrated in the Nowa Sarzyna commune. It also includes the chemical plants of CIECH Sarzyna S.A. and Silikony Polskie Sp. z o.o., and from 2021 also Sarzyna Chemical Sp. z o.o.
Technologies and quantities of fuels and raw materials used, as well as operational indicators (efficiency, availability, reliability) reduce to a minimum the negative impact of ENS on the natural environment, including climate, compared to an installation of similar power, fired e.g. by coal. ENS does not produce combustion waste, generates nearly half of the greenhouse gas emissions, approximately 7 times lower NOx emissions, and emits SO2 and dust in trace amounts. The technology used reduces the amount and aggressiveness of industrial wastewater, and the return of rainwater, condensate, and the use of condensate from heating systems allows to reduce the consumption of raw water.
In 2020, ENS obtained the Decision of the President of the ERO changing the license to generate electricity in terms of specifying the installed capacity from 112.8 MW to 112.815 MW.
In 2021, a photovoltaic installation was made on the roofs, parking lot, grounds and facade of the main building with a total capacity of 0.890 MW. The installation is not a renewable energy unit and is intended to generate electricity for own needs. This will allow ENS to supply more energy and power from its core business.
For many years, Elektrociepłownia Nowa Sarzyna has been supporting initiatives that are important to the local community, which translates into very good relations with residents.

In December 2021, two employees (as part of volunteering) and ENS got involved in the Szlachetna Paczka campaign, the necessary household appliances were purchased and Christmas packages were prepared for a needy family from the Leżajsk area.
Taking care of local communities, Polenergia does not work alone, but has been cooperating with other companies in the region for many years. Polenergia Elektrociepłownia Nowa Sarzyna together with ZGK / z.ch since 2013. CIECH Sarzyna uses uniform heat prices for municipal residents of Osiedle Awaryjne in Nowa Sarzyna, in accordance with the Agreements concluded with these parties. In addition, ENS has been granting a discount on heat prices for municipal residents every year since 2014.
