Key information

The Polenergia Group’s Elektrociepłownia Nowa Sarzyna is located at the north-western edge of the town of Nowa Sarzyna. NSCP occupies an area of approximately 6 ha. The facility is located in an industrial area, in the direct vicinity of CIECH Sarzyna S.A. chemical plants. (CIECH Group) and Sarzyna Chemical Sp. z o.o. (Lerg Group).

The project of construction and financing of investments in the project-finance formula was developed and supervised by the first owner of the Company, i.e. by the American corporation Enron (Houston, Texas). The construction of ENS started in mid-1998, and the CHP plant started its commercial operation on June 1, 2000. In 1997, ENS concluded a long-term electricity sales agreement with Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), and in 1998 it concluded a 20-year heat supply agreement with the nearby Organika-Sarzyna Chemical Plant. Additionally, since 2000, ENS has been selling heat to the inhabitants of Nowa Sarzyna. For twenty years, gas was supplied by Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo, Commercial Branch in Warsaw, under a purchase and sale agreement of high-methane natural gas, and from 2020 it was supplied by a Polenergia Group company (Polenergia Obrót SA).

In 2011, ENS was acquired by Kulczyk Investment. Currently, the company is part of the Polenergia S.A. Group. based in Warsaw. From 2020, ENS sells electricity to a trading company belonging to the Polenergia Group. Heat is still sold to neighboring chemical plants and to the local municipal plant. The company also provides a self-start and power system reconstruction service on the basis of a renewed three-year contract with Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (mid 2020 – mid 2023).

The service covers the self-start of gas turbine sets and their operation in a separate part of the PPS to the extent necessary for the correct course of the process of restoring the operation of the National Power System after a voltage failure in the PPS or in its part. The most important element of this process is the supply of energy from the ENS for commissioning the power unit in the selected system power plant.

ENS is the first thermal power plant in Poland, the generating units of which have the ability to self-start and can be used in the process of rebuilding the Polish Power System. Until now, only hydroelectric power plants had such technical possibilities.

In 2022, ENS obtained a certificate of a participant in the Capacity Market and contracted the capacity obligation for 2027.

Benefits of the Project

  • Energy production

ENS has all the permits necessary to operate in accordance with environmental protection regulations. 415 723 GJ heat production for sale

Technologies and quantities of fuels and raw materials used, as well as operational indicators (efficiency, availability, reliability) reduce to a minimum the negative impact of ENS on the natural environment, including climate, compared to an installation of similar power, fired e.g. by coal. ENS does not produce combustion waste, generates nearly half of the greenhouse gas emissions, approximately 7 times lower NOx emissions, and emits SO2 and dust in trace amounts. The technology used reduces the amount and aggressiveness of industrial wastewater, and the return of rainwater, condensate, and the use of condensate from heating systems allows to reduce the consumption of raw water.

Social impact

The company generates electricity and heat. Energy is generated in cogeneration when natural gas or reserve fuel – light fuel oil – is burned in a combined cycle gas turbine unit. Heat generation is possible also without co-generation in a stand-by source – auxiliary boiler house fired with natural gas or light heating oil. Generation of thermal energy is also possible without cogeneration in a backup source – an auxiliary boiler plant fired by natural gas or light fuel oil. As of 2021. The facility is also equipped with a photovoltaic installation with a capacity of 0.889 MW, used to cover its own needs for electricity.

The Company has 3 buyers of its products:

  • Polenergia Obrót S.A. – wholesale buyer of electricity,
  • Chemical plants (Sarzyna Chemical Sp. z o.o.) – buyer of heat for production and heating purposes and CIECH Sarzyna S.A. – buyer of electricity for the needs of the chemical plants,
  • Zakład Gospodarki Komunalnej Nowa Sarzyna Sp. z o.o. – buyer of heat for heating purposes

Educational activities supported by Polenergia Group

Polenergia is also heavily involved in educational activities as part of the Graj z nami w zielone!® programme, which is implemented in the project area of the Nowa Sarzyna CHP Plant. Fifteen educational institutions, i.e. primary schools and kindergartens, take part in green lessons.

The programme includes classes on water management, waste segregation and renewable energy sources.

Charitable activities supported by Polenergia Group

For many years, Elektrociepłownia Nowa Sarzyna has supported initiatives that are important for the local community, which translates into very good relations with the inhabitants. Support is given, among others, to activities for women as part of the support for Rural Housewives’ Club and sports activities for children and young people.

Impact on biodiversity

No penalties were imposed on the company in 2021. The last inspection by the Provincial Environmental Protection Inspectorate took place in June 2021. No non-compliances were found and no comments were made.

Since 2014, ENS has implemented the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in the field of combined heat and power generation. In May 2021, Lloyd’s Register Polska conducted an environmental audit in connection with the recertification of the environmental management system for compliance with the ISO 14001: 2015 standard. ENS has received a new Certificate of Approval ISO 14001: 2015 for the Environmental Management System in the field of combined heat and power generation, which will be valid for 3 years, i.e. from June 11, 2020 to June 10, 2023.
