What are the opportunities behind developing offshore wind energy? What are the components of an offshore wind farm? What are the available career paths and what are the skills and abilities that can be useful in joining the new sector supporting the energy transformation of Poland? The answers to these and other questions were given to the youth from the Gdansk upper secondary schools during the "Onshore + Offshore = Our Future" workshops organised by the Pomeranian Employers under the patronage of Equinor and Polenergia under the Second Flagship Programme "Academy of Marine Competence".
The first day of workshops was held on 25 April in Gdansk and attended by the group of students from three technical schools: Conradinum Shipbuilding and Technical School, Energy School Complex and Maritime School Complex. The workshops were moderated together by the Polenergia experts: Dr Magdalena Klera-Nowopolska, Paweł Mawduk and the Equinor experts: Dorota Bastrikin and Marek Świerżyński. They aimed at presentation of projects of both companies and sharing comprehensive knowledge on the latest technologies applied in the offshore sector and on the elements of infrastructure to be installed in the Baltic Sea. The students were informed on how to cooperate with the stakeholders and implement projects based on the concept of co-existence and, first of all, gained knowledge on the available career paths and profiles in various areas of competences of key significance for development of the new industry in Poland. Inspiring discussions and lively questions and answers session demonstrated how attractive and interesting is the offshore wind energy sector for the young entrants of technical schools. The meeting ended with a game in the form of an interactive test concerning the energy transformation and the role of wind energy in developing green power in Poland.
Education is vital for implementation of one of the five Flagship Programmes contained in the Supply Chain Plan of Baltic II and Baltic III Offshore Wind Farms. The Second Flagship Programme “Academy of Marine Competence” covers the initiatives supporting the education of staff for the offshore wind energy sector and building the value chain for the region.
